Costume of the 17th – 19th Centuries

Seren Mair: Outdoor/Workwear Costume

Costume in Cymru is an area of contention. Traditional dress was functional. Charlotte Guest – 19th Century translator of The Mabinogion – is credited with establishing a ‘costume’ to be worn on national holidays but its authenticity has been questioned by academics and historians. Charlotte Guest did promote the woolen industry in Cymru and was influential in encouraging mills to expand their designs.

Seren Mair is a dollmaker in Sir Caerfyrddin – her dolls are extensively researched and the clothing she has designed for them is authentic. Follow this link to learn more about traditional dress: Danycoed Heritage Dolls.

An exhibition at the National Library of Wales included clothing from all walks of life as well as a competition for young designers to use the traditional styles and motifs to bring betgwns and hetiau into the 21st Century.
